How To Measure a Latch Offset
To determine the distance of offset, close the door and measure the distance from the outside surface of the door and that of the external wall. This is the offset.

How To Measure Hinge Offset
The distance from the outside surface of the door and that of the frame is the offset.

Although this method works for face mount hinges, edgemount hinges are a little different.
